The crash happened near Highway 27 and Major Mackenzie Drive at around 8 a.m.

Const. Lisa Moskaluk told Global News the crash involved a black BMW sedan and a grey Audi SUV.

“The impact of the collision caused a light pole to come down on the BMW, and it ultimately trapped the occupants inside,” Moskaluk said.

Moskaluk said there was a driver and a passenger inside of the BMW.

The driver, a 57-year-old man, was pronounced dead and a 60-year-old man who was a passenger in the BMW was taken to a hospital in critical condition.

A woman driving the SUV was treated by paramedics at the scene but was not taken to hospital, Moskaluk said, adding she remained at the scene for the investigation.

Roads in the area are closed as police and major collision investigators gather evidence into how the crash occurred. Moskaluk said roads will be shut down for most of the day.
