MONTREAL – Quebec Liberal Leader Philippe Couillard can now sit in the provincial legislature, nine months after winning the job.
Couillard won a byelection on Monday in the Montreal riding of Outremont.
He took more than 50 per cent of the vote in a riding that traditionally votes Liberal.

The governing Parti Quebecois and the Coalition for Quebec’s Future did not field candidates there.
Couillard has been Liberal leader since last March.
Outremont became available after former Liberal finance minister Raymond Bachand resigned following a failed leadership bid.
The Liberals also won a second byelection in Montreal; David Heurtel was the victor in Viau.
The Liberal wins give the party 50 seats in the 125-seat national assembly, four behind the PQ.
The Coalition has 18, the leftist Quebec Solidaire has two and there is one Independent.
