Toronto Police say a man in his 60s has died after “some kind of altercation” with another man who was riding a mountain bike on Tuesday morning.
Insp. Peter Wehby told reporters the incident happened near Roncesvalles and Boustead avenues, near Dundas Street West, at around 9 a.m.
Police initially said a man was riding his bicycle in the area when he was struck by an object. In the update provided by Wehby on Tuesday afternoon, he said, “We do not believe at this point that the victim was on a bike.”
Wehby said when officers arrived, they found the victim unconscious.
“We believe that the male had an interaction with a second male and at that time, there was some kind of an altercation that we believe happened which resulted in the male going unconscious,” Wehby said.
Wehby would not elaborate on what happened during the altercation.
The victim, a man in his 60s, was rushed to hospital in life-threatening condition. He died a short time later, Wehby said.
Police told Global News in another update on Wednesday, the victim had gone out for a walk in the morning and during the altercation the suspect “was throwing objects.” The victim did return to his home and then he was rushed to hospital, police said.
Investigators said they are looking for a suspect described as a man in his 40s, around five-feet-10 inches tall, with a medium to slim build, and brown hair. He was wearing a black jacket and pants and was on a standard black mountain bike.
Wehby is asking for the public’s assistance for anyone with dashcam or porch video to contact police.
Officers with Toronto Police’s 11 Division are investigating but Wehby said homicide investigators are also assisting, although the investigation has not been deemed a homicide. Wehby said the investigation is currently classified as a “suspicious death.”
