EDMONTON – Three family members were killed in a farmhouse fire in Castor, Alberta on Sunday morning.

The victims have been identified as Sandi and Gordon Klaus, and their daughter Monica Klaus, who was visiting from out of town.

The couple’s son Jason was not home at the time and was not injured in the fire.

“Very, very sad,” said Castor mayor Garry DeVloo. “It’s a devastating event in the town of Castor. Very sad.”

“The family, well, they’ve lived here all their lives and they have two grown children.”

“My son graduated with Monica and played hockey with the son,” he added.

DeVloo told Global News Jason is incredibly distraught at this time, but that the community will be there to offer support.

“This town will fall right in behind Jason, give him what he needs. I understand there’s a group of farmers who went out to feed the cattle and make sure everything was taken care of and I imagine they’re there again today.”

The RCMP is now trying to determine the cause of the fire.

A forensic identification team and provincial fire investigators were still on scene Monday afternoon.

While RCMP are not confirming the fatalities, they say three people are unaccounted for.

Castor is 60 kilometres east of Stettler.
