The Calgary Zoo is expanding its animal family, with several newcomers arriving in 2014.

The zoo has announced that komodo dragons and greater one-horned rhinos are on the way.

Komodo dragons are large lizards native to Indonesia and greater one-horned rhinos are the largest of the rhino species. They are primarily found in northern India.

Several new madrills will also be arriving at their new home in the Rainforest area. Mandrills are primates closely related to the baboon.

The zoo has recently welcomed a white black bear, Eurasian wild boars and Himalayan monals (pheasants).

The zoo says it’s all part of the renewal after the June floods.

“In the wake of the flood-related closure of the South American building, we have unfortunately had to say goodbye to a number of species that we weren’t able to continue to keep here.,” says Dr. Jake Veasy, Director of Animal Care. “We’re now able to begin to implement elements of our master plan and the renewal of the zoo’s animal collection.”
