MONTREAL – A suspect in an apparent armed standoff with police for several hours Saturday was not in his dwelling when police finally gained entry.
The incident began when two men were having a fight in an apartment on St. Laurent Blvd. near Pine Ave. about 6:30 p.m.
One of the men, who witnesses said had a gun, barricaded himself inside his apartment and police were still negotiating with him as of 11:30 p.m. It was unclear what had become of the other suspect involved in the fight. The armed man appeared to be alone in his apartment and there were no injuries reported, said Montreal police Constable Olivier Lapointe.
The incident caused police to close off a large perimeter to traffic in the area.
Officers waited for hours to obtain a warrant to gain entry to the man’s apartment. They gained entry at some point after 11:45 p.m., Constable Yannick Paradis said Sunday.
“We thought he was in there, but he wasn’t when police officers got inside,” Paradis said.
Police will try to contact the man who lived at the address to confirm witness accounts that he had a firearm, Paradis said.
