Regina’s Pasqua Hospital ER to remain open through December

REGINA – The Regina Qu’Appelle Health Region (RQHR) has been able to make arrangements to keep the ER at the Pasqua hospital open 24 hours a day until the end of December.

“We are delighted we can now offer our physicians some short and longer-term assurance of support which will enable them to provide coverage to the end of the year. We thank them for their continued commitment to the patients of southern Saskatchewan and to our region. We also thank all of our staff and union partners for their contributions to the continued operation of both Emergency Departments in the city,” said Dr. David McCutcheon, vice president Physician and Intergrated Health Services.

Last week RQHR was able to find a solution to provide ER care at both Regina hospitals for a two-week period.

Now that more doctors have confirmed they are able to work extra shifts, the ER will be able to stay open over the holiday season.

The RQHR is continuing to plan having doctors cover the ER into the New Year and are confident this will allow the Pasqua ER to be open 24-hours a day.

“It is a great relief to everyone to know that emergency health care needs will continue to be addressed at both Regina Emergency Departments on a 24 hour basis over the holiday period,” said McCutcheon. “The assistance of additional locums, and our continued work with the government to define the parameters of a trauma program to help ease the workload of our Emergency Department physicians in future, have been immensely helpful in supporting physicians in their ongoing commitment to patients and the region. We will continue to review options for coverage in January with our physicians and partners.”

Patients who believe they are in need of emergency service should go to the Pasqua ER where they will be seen quickly, but should consider using an alternate service like the Meadow Primary Health Care Centre if possible.
