CALGARY – Over 80 residents of a Fairview apartment complex were forced into the bitter cold on Thursday, after a fire started in their building.
Fire crews rushed to the 300 block of Heritage Drive S.E. just after 6 a.m.
Heavy smoke could be seen coming from one of the units in the 28 unit apartment complex.
Officials say the fire was confined to one apartment and was extinguished quickly by firefighters.
Calgary Transit brought in buses to keep evacuated residents warm.
One person had to be treated for smoke inhalation on scene, and was taken to hospital by EMS.
Fire crews ventilated the building to ensured there was no residual smoke or carbon monoxide.
The cause of the fire is unknown, and so far no damage estimate has been released.
The building is managed by the non-profit organization CUPS on behalf of the Calgary Homeless Foundation
