ST. JOHN’S, N.L. – Marine Atlantic is going to go back to a first-come, first-served system for trucks using the Nova Scotia-to-Newfoundland ferry service this winter.
The Crown corporation says it will no longer take reservations from trucking firms, beginning Nov. 14.
The reservation system had been criticized by the owners of smaller trucking firms, saying they were often unable to board the ferries because larger firms booked all of the available space.
The Crown corporation says in a news release today that the decision to drop the reservation system is the result of frequent breakdowns in older vessels and "the lack of capacity."
The corporation says the breakdown of the ferry MV Joseph and Clara Smallwood has made it difficult to continue commercial reservations.
The Crown agency also says it plans to reinstate the reservation system once it brings new vessels into service by next spring.
