Police in Richmond Hill say a missing person case is now a homicide investigation after the remains of a man’s body were found buried in a yard.

York Regional Police said the body found on Elmwood Avenue was that of a 30-year-old man who went missing in June 2018.

The disappearance was investigated at the time, police said, and efforts to find him were unsuccessful. The disappearance was considered suspicious and homicide detectives took over in 2021.

In June 2023, five years after the disappearance, the man’s body was found in the yard of a home on Elmwood Avenue, the same street he disappeared from, according to police.

“The cause of death is not being released at this time,” detectives said.
