A crash that sent three people to hospital on Tuesday morning prompted Edmonton police to shut 118th Avenue in both directions by Wayne Gretzky Drive.

Police said investigators believe the crash occurred at 4:40 a.m. Police believe a pickup truck heading east on 118th Avenue went through a red light and entered the southbound lanes of Wayne Gretzky Drive “at a very high rate of speed.”

At the same time, another pickup truck was headed south on a green light and the collision occurred.

Two people from the truck that was heading east on 118th Avenue were taken to hospital. One person from the other truck was also transported to hospital. Police did not have details about the victims or the severity of their injuries.

The northbound lanes on Wayne Gretzky Drive were not affected.

Shortly before 11 a.m., police provided an update and said the southbound lanes of Wayne Gretzky Drive had been reopened. However, they noted that 118th Avenue would remain closed in both directions near the scene of the crash while a streetlight was being repaired.

“We are being told that the closure could be up to 12 hours,” a police spokesperson said.
