A 48-year-old man is dead after shot by Niagara Regional Police (NRPS) in a St. Catharines, Ont. residential neighbourhood, according to Ontario’s police watchdog.
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) says the incident was the result of officers encountering a person with a knife at a home on Melody Trail near Arthur Street around 9 p.m. Monday.
“Officers were at the front door of the residence when the man approached with a knife,” the SIU said in a release.

The man was taken to hospital where he was later pronounced deceased.
Five SIU investigators have been assigned to the case.
A post-mortem is scheduled for Wednesday.
The SIU is seeking witnesses, videos and photos tied to the occurrence and asking anyone with information can reach out to the detectives online.
