TORONTO – Authors often lay themselves bare on the page, but a new fundraiser is taking that concept to a whole new level.
Yann Martel and Vincent Lam are among a dozen Canuck authors who have agreed to shed their clothes for a calendar to benefit PEN Canada.
The “Bare it for Books” campaign was launched Tuesday, with the 2014 calendar set to be revealed in October 2013.
Organizers of the campaign say all proceeds will go to PEN Canada, an organization that advocates for freedom of expression.
Lam – who wrote the Giller Prize-winning “Bloodletting & Miraculous Cures” – will serve as Mr. October, while “Life of Pi” author Martel will be Mr. December.
The calendar will also feature female writers Angie Abdou (“The Canterbury Trail”) and Farzana Doctor (“Stealing Nasreen”).
The campaign is the brainchild of Amanda Leduc (whose upcoming novel is called “The Miracles of Ordinary Men”) and Allegra Young, who works for a classical music label.
