FREDERICTON – Retirees from the civil service in New Brunswick are staging a large demonstration outside the provincial legislature to oppose government plans to change their pensions.
The government wants to move to a shared-risk model in an effort to address a $1-billion deficit in the public service pension plan.
The new plan would only see increases when the pension makes money.
Protest organizer Bonnie Hoyt Hallett says the government needs to stop and consult with retirees and current public service employees.
During Tuesday’s throne speech, the government said it was pressing ahead with the pension changes.
Police estimate that more than 1,500 people have gathered for the protest.
Many are carrying signs saying that the government isn’t listening to their concerns.
