Ralph Klein Legacy Park unveiled

The Ralph Klein Legacy Park, which integrates public art in the landscape, is to be unveiled in a ceremony today.

The park features large land art sculptures of monoliths and pyramids by well-known artist Beverly Pepper.

"The monoliths at Ralph Klein Legacy Park are meant to herald the uniqueness of the wetlands," said Pepper in a statement.

The 30-hectare park is part of a engineered wetland. Once completed, a stormwater treatment system will use the natural purification process of the wetlands to return run-off to the Bow River.

The park will serve as an environmental education centre, to be used primarily by school groups.

According to city officials, it’s the first Calgary park to be named for a former mayor during his lifetime.

Klein and Pepper are set to attend the 10:45 a.m. dedication ceremony at the park, off 84th Street S.E., about a kilometre south of 114th Avenue.
