TORONTO — Canadian pop star Justin Bieber, who has been widely criticized for his headline-making cockiness — got a taste of humble pie on Sunday.
The 19-year-old singer said it was “a wake-up call” to visit a poor village in Guatemala where he saw children living in shacks with little food or clean water.
Bieber, who arrived via helicopter after performing a concert Saturday in Guatemala City, helped build a school and spent time playing with children — even giving his sneakers away to one lucky boy.
Bieber was accompanied by workers from Pencils of Promise, a charity founded by his manager’s brother.
In a video he posted online Monday, Bieber described the experience as “one of the most magical days of my life.”
He added: “Any problem that I have, it’s nothing at all because these kids have absolutely nothing. We’re stressing over the little things and yet they’re so happy.”
Bieber performs Tuesday in Colombia. His Believe tour ends Dec. 8 in Australia.
