TTC to debate new subway numbering system

ABOVE: The TTC will soon debate a new subway numbering system. Jackson Proskow reports.

TORONTO – The Toronto Transit Commission (TTC) board is scheduled to debate today whether to change its subway lines to a number system.

The new proposed signage is part of the recommendations illustrated in the New Wayfinding Standards report.

The Yonge-University-Spadina line would be known as line number one.

The Bloor-Danforth Line would be labelled line two, Scarborough RT Line number three and the Sheppard Line as number four.

Line number five and six have been reserved for future lines.

The report says the numeric codes offer several advantages such as making it easier for first time users to remember, accessible to riders with language or cognitive barriers and will not need to be changed when lines are extended.

TTC spokesperson Brad Ross tweeted these “before and after” photos Tuesday on what the new signage would look like.
