TORONTO – RCMP have charged a Toronto man after Wednesday’s three-hour evacuation of the Prime Minister’s Office and nearby buildings in Ottawa.

Forty-five-year-old Mohamoud Jimale has been charged with one count of uttering threats and mischief. He was scheduled to appear in Ontario Provincial Court Thursday morning.

Jimale was arrested Wednesday morning following an incident involving a suspicious package at Langevin Block, the building that houses the Prime Minister’s Office.

Police say the incident happened around 11:20 a.m. ET Wednesday, when a man entered the office on Wellington St. and left behind a suitcase-sized package.

Leah Mammoletti, a security guard, said Wednesday she was at the front desk when a man entered, threw a suitcase and started praying in a foreign language.

Nearby businesses were evacuated, area streets were closed, and a hazmat team rendered the suspicious package “safe” Wednesday afternoon.
