New rental rates for flood victims in temporary housing

Above: Residents settle into temporary homes. As Jill Croteau reports, most will have just one month free of rent.

CALGARY – The provincial government has outlined the rental rates flood victims will be paying if they are staying in temporary neighbourhoods.

Tenants staying in the newly opened Great Plains site in Calgary and the Saddlebrook camp in High River will have to start paying rent on November 15th.

“After the floods, our government committed to providing up to 90 days of cost-free accommodation for flood evacuees,” says Doug Griffiths, Minister of Municipal Affairs. “As people begin to make longer term plans for re-establishing their lives, it’s fitting that they now begin contributing to the cost of their accommodation.”

Monthly rent will vary depending on the number of people in a household and will offset the cost of their accommodation, meals, utilities, daily housekeeping, laundry, internet, cable television and recreational services.

The rent charged to residents will cover approximately 10 per cent of the overall operating cost of the temporary neighbourhoods.
