A black bear cub that was stuck for days on top of a power pole in the Okanagan has been tranquilized after finally climbing down by itself.
The bear was living with its mother in a corn field near Lumby, but when the field was cut the mother disappeared and the frightened cub ran up a hydro pole.
A crowd of onlookers concerned for the bear’s safety may have scared the bear further.
BC Hydro was called in to kill the power to the lines before the bear was electrocuted as conservation officers weighed their options.
Simply shooting the bear with a tranquilizer wasn’t an option because it could fall to its death.
As a conservation officer went up with a snare, the bear finally climbed down the pole.
It was later tracked down and tranquillized so that it can be sent to the Northern Lights Wildlife Society in Smithers.
After it is raised to a young adult, it will be transported back to the Lumby area next year.
