B.C.’s new transportation minister has met for the first time with the mayors’ council on regional transportation.

One of the hot topics was the announcement by the provincial government about a new bridge to replace the Massey tunnel.

The premier announced construction of the bridge will begin in 2017.

“We were very clear in announcing before the election campaign that with respect to the George Massey tunnel , we would consult with British Columbians on desired options for a new crossing and we did,” says Todd Stone.

But, some mayors are questioning the decision to go ahead with the project without a referendum.

“They just announced a three-billion-dollar capital project without a referendum,” says But Richmond mayor Malcolm Brodie. “Surely, if require this overall level of vision, this new bridge should be put under that microscope.”
