EDMONTON – A woman facing a second degree murder charge for the killing of her husband appeared in court Wednesday morning.

Nyuk Hwang made her first court appearance via Closed Circuit Television. Hwang appeared agitated when she walked into the room. She looked at the television screen and said “I am scared. I am very panicked.” She then asked for ten more seconds.

In court, the counsel for Hwang’s defence asked for six weeks to bring forward disclosure. Bail was not spoken to.

Hwang wore glasses and appeared to have a bruise on her forehead. At one point, she could be seen hitting her clasped hands over her chest.

The 52-year-old Edmonton resident is accused of beating her husband, 56-year-old Teck Hwang, at their north end home Sunday evening, resulting in his death.

It’s an incident Edmonton Police Service (EPS) Staff Sergeant Bill Clark has called “a classic case of domestic violence.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Police say officers found Teck Hwang in cardiac arrest when they arrived at the home. Hwang died in hospital several hours later.

A Medical Examiner’s autopsy on Teck Hwang’s body revealed he died of “blunt drastic trauma.”

Clark says it’s the first time during his career as a homicide detective he’s heard a medical examiner use “blunt drastic trauma” as a cause of death.

Investigators say an object was used during the incident but haven’t revealed the type of object or the details of the injuries.

The couple has a teenage son who was reportedly home at the time of the incident. He has been in contact with children’s services. Police say the son is obviously traumatized.

Several members of the Hwang family were inside the court room Wednesday.

Global News spoke to one man who says he’s a distant cousin of the accused. He would only say he was very surprised when he received the news about the death and subsequent murder charges.

According to court documents, there is a history of domestic violence between Nyuk Hwang and Teck Hwang. In 2009, Nyuk Hwang was convicted of assault against her husband and served a three week sentence.
