EDMONTON – The Edmonton Police Service (EPS) says an arrest has been made in a break and enter and sexual assault in northeast Edmonton.

Jason Ben Moes, 33, was arrested in Fort McMurray Thursday morning, after a three-week investigation into events that took place in the Abbottsfield area on Aug. 3, 2013.

That Saturday morning, witnesses reportedly heard breaking glass and saw a man climbing through a ground floor window at a home in a townhouse in Abottsfield at around 9:30 a.m. Witnesses then reportedly heard a woman screaming.

A 22-year-old woman, who was alone in the home, was allegedly physically and sexually assaulted by a man who appeared to be drunk.

Police say the woman managed to get away from the attacker and locked herself into a bathroom.

The man reportedly left the scene before police arrived.  Staff Sgt. Shawna Goodkey, of the Sexual Assault Unit, said that  investigators relied on DNA, tips from the public and help from RCMP in this case.

“This was a detailed and involved police investigation. The crime was very violent and traumatising and we hope that by having the suspect off the streets it will bring some peace of mind to the community involved in this case.”

“Very happy that we were able to find him,” Goodkey said about the suspect. “Of course, ideally, I’d love to find him at the scene and be able to arrest him right there, but we don’t work in an ideal world.”

Moes, of Edmonton, has been charged with the following: break and enter and commit assault, assault, sexual assault causing bodily harm, unlawful confinement, and disguise with intent.

Investigators believed the man broke into the home for the sole purpose of sexually assaulting the woman. The woman reportedly doesn’t know the suspect.
