Pattie Mallette talks about believing in her son Justin Bieber

TORONTO — Justin Bieber’s mother admitted Friday she was hesitant to thrust her only child into the world of pop music.

“I had heard all the horror stories,” said Pattie Mallette. “I didn’t want to throw him to the wolves. I wanted to keep him at home and keep him sheltered.”

Promoting her book Nowhere But Up: Teen Edition on Global’s The Morning Show, Mallette told Antony Robart she didn’t want to stand in the way of Bieber’s dreams.

“I couldn’t deny him that chance,” she said. “It’s what he really wanted to do.”

Though Mallette refused to address Bieber’s headline-making behaviour, she hinted the 19-year-old superstar could learn from her own life experiences. In her book, she opens up about sexual abuse that led her to drugs and alcohol.

“He knows my story and we talk about things that I’ve struggled with,” said Mallette, adding that she hopes she’s still “a voice in [his] ear.”

She added:  “We’re close. We talk a lot.”

Ultimately, Mallette said, Bieber needs to make his own choices.

“He could stop everything today or he could continue doing anything he wants,” she said. “He wants to be a career artist and he wants to be around a long time.”

Just call her a Belieber.

“I’m going to cheer him on the whole way.”
