Trudeau overwhelmed by Okanagan support

KELOWNA, B.C. — Liberal leader Justin Trudeau continued his RV tour of the B.C. Interior with short stops in Kelowna and Vernon Tuesday.

About 250 enthusiastic supporters were on hand for Trudeau’s meet-and-greet in Kelowna’s Kerry Park.

The Liberal leader has avoided formal events on this tour, preferring to shake hands and pose for pictures.

Many of the Okanagan residents who met with Trudeau in Kelowna and Vernon are long-time liberals who supported his father, former prime minister Pierre Trudeau.

The Liberal leader did make a short campaign-style speech in Kelowna, which traditionally votes Conservative in federal elections.

Trudeau told the party faithful that a breakthrough is possible.  “I’m overwhelmed by the support we’re getting from people in places that haven’t voted Liberal in a very long time,”  he said.

Trudeau has been joined by his wife and two young children on the tour, which wraps up in Kamloops.

On Monday the family hiked to Kokanee Lake near Nelson, where Trudeau’s brother, Michel, died in 1998 in an avalanche.
