‘Sharknado’ causes a storm of social media buzz

TORONTO — What do you get when you cross sharks with a tornado? Sharknado, of course, and a storm of social media buzz.

The campy movie about sharks in a tornado (really, you had to explain? – ed.) caused a flurry of activity on Twitter during its Thursday premiere on U.S. cable channel SyFy.

According to analytics company Fizziology, there were more than 604,000 tweets about Sharknado in a seven-hour period Thursday night.

Twitter Data said there were more than 5,000 tweets per minute at its peak.

Sharknado, starring Ian Ziering and Tara Reid, also inspired celebrities to post comments on social media.

“I’m not so sure about the science in this movie guys,” tweeted Wil Wheaton. “I don’t think the writers of #SharkNado understand how flooding and fluid dynamics work.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

Former SNL star Horatio Sanz quipped: “I wish I could join in on the shenanigans, But I had a cousin that was killed by a #Sharknado back in ’93. #RamonRIP.”

Added actor B.J. Novak: “I’m afraid that now when we have a real sharknado everyone’s going to treat it like a joke.”

According to Asylum, the company behind Sharknado, the movie cost less than $2 million to make and has earned millions in sales to video-on-demand and DVD distributors around the world.

Sharknado will air Saturday night on Space.
