Tornado touches down near Roblin

Tornado seen near Kamsack, SK. Ryan Crouse, Yorkton Storm Hunter

It was a night of wicked weather in western Manitoba.

A strong storm on Saturday drenched small towns and spawned the province’s first tornado this year.

Environment Canada tells Global News a tornado touched down about 8 kms south of Roblin near Highway 83.

It stayed on the ground for between five to ten minutes and was spotted by someone driving along Highway 83 around 7:00 p.m..

The only damage that has been reported is a few uprooted trees in the area.

“It’s very difficult to measure the strength of tornadoes unless they actually hit anything so the fact this one knocked trees over means it certainly was strong enough to damage or destroy structures had it struck anything,” said Dan Fulton, meteorologist with Environment Canada.

There were also several funnel clouds spotted in area.

No one was hurt, however the small town of Rhein, near Yorkton, was heavily damaged by plough winds.
