CALGARY- While hundreds of homes across southern Alberta were destroyed by the devastating floods, images of one getting swept away in Millarville has become a symbol of the destruction.
On June 21, Pat Fisher’s backyard in the Foothills began being eaten away by the raging creek. She could only stand by and watch helplessly, as her quaint home collapsed, before being swallowed up by the flood water.
Annette Paradis was renting the home at the time.
“You could hear the earth coming out, ‘kapoosh kapoosh,’ and rocks going by,” she remembers. “I never want to see anything like that again.”
Rubble from the front porch and a garage are all that are left behind—except for one photo in a frame that was rescued from downstream.
“We lost our material things that are replaceable, but it really was heartbreaking,” Fisher says. “It was our spot, it was perfect, and it’s gone.”
The home had recently been renovated, and Fisher is still determining if insurance will cover the loss.
