Flood cleanup underway at Prince’s Island Park

CALGARY – Prince’s Island Park is a popular destination for tourists and Calgarians alike, but the park is a mess after devastating flooding that began in late June.

Officials are working long hours to clean up the island, which is also home to several well-loved summer events.

The Calgary Folk Music Festival kicks off in about three weeks, and crowds normally pack the site in July and August to watch Shakespeare in the Park.

Organizers of Shakespeare in the Park announced on June 26th they would be relocating their performance of Romeo and Juliet to the outdoor amphitheatre at Mount Royal University for the summer.

The Shakespeare in the Park set, trailer and shed used to stage the show were all destroyed by the flood water.

Over the long weekend, 250 Calgary Folk Music Festival volunteers pitched in to try to speed up the park cleanup.

Organizers will be posting more volunteer opportunities on their Facebook page.

City officials say they’re dealing with electrical issues, and still clearing out about 75 centimeters of silt in some areas.
