Dog stolen in truck from Squamish parking lot found safe in Kelowna: One man in custody

UPDATE: June 25, 9:25 a.m. – Good news! Wyatt, the dog, has been found in Kelowna by the RCMP, and one man is in custody.

On Monday night around 10 p.m., the Kelowna RCMP were tipped off about two men in a suspected stolen truck who are attempting to sell stolen property out of the vehicle in the downtown area.

At 12:30 a.m. the police found the truck at 7 Eleven on Lakeshore Road. One man spotted the police and fled on foot, while the other was apprehended inside the truck. However, this was a different truck than the one Wyatt was originally sitting in when he was taken. This truck was a green GMC Sierra and was stolen out of Perth County, Ontario, earlier this month.

Police said inside the truck they found a “friendly chocolate Lab named Wyatt”. Officers say he was “visibly shaken from the ordeal but overjoyed when he was returned to his owners.”

The investigation is ongoing and no charges have yet been laid.

A 35 year old Ontario man remains in custody and faces possible charges of possession of stolen property. The second man has yet to be found.

Previous story:

Wyatt is a three-year-old chocolate Labrador. He loves to be outside and go biking and climbing with his owner, Frank Choltco-Devlin.

He is now missing after the truck he was in was stolen from the parking lot of the Stawamus Chief in Squamish on Sunday.

“He follows me everywhere I go,” said Choltco-Devlin. “He is truly my best friend. I am sure he is scared wherever he is and I just want him home safe. They can keep the truck, keep the bikes, keep my valuables, just please give me my dog back.”

Choltco-Devlin said he and a friend were climbing the Chief and when they returned to the parking lot, the truck was gone.

“Wyatt usually comes climbing with us, but he can’t go on the multi-pitch climbs on the Chief,” he said. “He is usually pretty happy to nap in the truck while we are out climbing. Since it is such a busy parking lot with plenty of climbers in and out, I never thought that my entire truck might get stolen.”

Choltco-Devlin said he has friends that saw the truck in the lot at 1:30 p.m. and when they got down from the climb at 5 p.m. it was gone.

“We don’t have any solid leads on the truck or Wyatt,” he added, “but we do have a lot of people on the search through Facebook and posters and Craigslist.”

Before leaving the lot they found the truck’s ignition core on the ground, and that leads them to believe the truck was stolen.

The truck is a 2002 Dodge Ram 2500 4×4 running on biodiesel. It has a Washington state licence plate B95011L.

Sgt. Wayne Pride with the Squamish RCMP confirmed they are looking into the theft, but have no leads at this time. “Luckily here in Squamish vehicle theft is low compared to other areas,” he said, adding they have put the info into their police computers.

“They sure as heck better be taking care of this dog,” Pride said.

Two mountain bikes were also on the truck, which was last seen parked at the intersection of Hwy 99 and Mamquam Forest Road.

If anyone has any information about Wyatt they can also contact Choltco-Devlin directly at frankcd@gmail.com.

There is a $1,000 reward for Wyatt’s safe return. He is wearing a green collar with a dog tag that has his name, Choltco-Devlin’s email and a phone number.

“If Wyatt is returned, they can collect the reward with no questions asked,” he said.
