WINNIPEG – JP Hoe says his three Western Canadian Music Awards nominations have extended his music career.
“It just sort of gives you a little bit more motivation to keep going,” Hoe said Thursday on the Global Winnipeg Morning News. “This has bought me another two years.”
Hoe’s 2012 album Mannequin was nominated for Independent Album of the Year and Pop Recording of the Year, and Christian and Sean Procter were nominated for Video of the Year for Hoe’s song Nothing’s Gonna Harm You.
Hoe, who plays at the Winnipeg Art Gallery Thursday night as part of the Live on the Rooftop series, is one of dozens of Manitoba musicians nominated for the WCMAs (see the full list below). The awards will be handed out Oct. 16 in Calgary.
“I don’t really expect to win, but it does feel good to be nominated,” Hoe said.
He’s pleased the nominations came for Mannequin.
“It’s my most special recording, I guess,” he said, giving kudos to co-producer John Paul Peters. “These songs are the best songs I’ve ever written.”
Hoe just came off a lengthy road trip, playing 140 shows in the past 13 months, he said.
It wasn’t a glamorous rock-star tour, although it had its moments.
“We had a show in L.A. and then we flew to New York to play a show, but then we had to fly back to L.A. and drive home,” he said with a laugh. “It went from rock star to bar star.”

After that experience, he plans to spend the summer touring Manitoba, including playing at the Brandon Folk Festival and the Icelandic Festival in Gimli.
It’s hard work and he needs to recharge his batteries, he said, but it’s worth it.
“It’s the life and I’m happy I get to do it as a full-time job,” he said. “I wouldn’t change anything.”
