Canada’s Tatiana Maslany wins at Critics’ Choice TV Awards

TORONTO — Saskatchewan native Tatiana Maslany was the only Canadian winner at Monday night’s Critics’ Choice Television Awards in Beverly Hills.

Maslany, who was born in Regina, won Best Actress in a Drama Series for her role as Sarah Manning in Orphan Black.

The 27-year-old beat out Claire Danes (Homeland), Vera Farmiga (Bates Motel), Julianna Margulies (The Good Wife), Elisabeth Moss (Mad Men) and Keri Russell (The Americans) for the top honour.

Orphan Black, a co-production of BBC America and Canada’s Space, is filmed in Toronto. A second season of the sci-fi has been ordered.

Maslany started dancing and acting as a young child and, after graduating from Dr. Martin LeBoldus High School, started landing roles in TV and film projects. Her list of credits includes Being Erica and The Vow.

The pick for Best Drama Series went to both Breaking Bad and Game of Thrones.

Other winners at the Critics’ Choice Television Awards include Louis C.K., Julia Louis-Dreyfus, Jane Fonda, Michael Douglas, Patton Oswalt, Bryan Cranston, Michael Cudlitz, Monica Potter, Zachary Quinto and Sarah Paulson.

The critics favourite was The Big Bang Theory, which won Best Comedy Series, Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series (Simon Helberg), Best Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series (Kaley Cuoco).
