RCMP announced in a press release on Tuesday that progress in the investigation into the disappearance of Lyle and Marie McCann has led them to name Travis Vader a suspect in the case.
The St. Albert couple have not been seen since July 3rd, when they left their home bound for British Columbia. Investigators suspect foul play in their disappearance., but investigators are not releasing the details of the suspected foul play in order to protect the integrity of the investigation.
The McCann’s burnt out motorhome was found at the Minnow Lake campground near Edson, Alberta on July 5th. On July 16th, the couple’s missing motorhome was also found in the bush not far from Edson. On the same day RCMP named Travis Vader as a person of interest in the case.
“We have had positive progress, and we now have enough information to up his status to a suspect,” RCMP spokeswoman Doris Stapleton said Tuesday.
Stapleton could not say whether there are any other persons of interests or suspects in the case at this time.
“In all investigations, we must not get tunnel vision,” she said
According to RCMP, a person of interest is anyone police feel that may have information regarding an investigation. A suspect is defined as a known person suspected of committing a crime.
Travis Vader was arrested on outstanding warrants unrelated to the McCann case on July 19th.
There is still no sign of Lyle or Marie McCann.
Police are still asking anyone who may have information about the case to call the Edson RCMP Detachment at 780-723-8800, the St. Albert RCMP Detachment at 780-458-4300 or Crime Stoppers at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
