KELOWNA, BC – More than 200 Okanagan residents of every age turned up for a rally against genetically modified organisms (GMO).
Kelowna was one of 250 cities around the world where protests were organized by those who believe GMO’s are unhealthy and poisoning the environment.
Genetically modified plants are grown from seeds that are engineered to resist insecticides and herbicides, add nutritional benefits or otherwise improve crop yields and increase the global food supply. Many corn, soybean and cotton crops grown in North America have been genetically modified.
The “March against Monsanto” targeted the US based seed manufacturer which maintains that its seeds improve agriculture by helping farmers produce more from their land while conserving resources such as water and energy.
The US Senate this week overwhelmingly rejected a bill that would allow states to require labeling of genetically modified foods.
Okanagan protesters who marched from the Kelowna Farmer’s Market held signs that included statements as, “Stop poisoning our foods” and “Say No to GMO”.
