Police warn residents, slow down this long weekend

Typically, on a long weekend in this province there are more then 1,700 crashes – 500 people injured – and three deaths.

In an effort to prevent the carnage, law enforcement launched an operation on the Sea to Sky Highway in Lions Bay today.

They were looking for distracted drivers, aggressive drivers, and those who aren’t wearing a seat belt.

If you’re going more than 40 kilometres over the speed limit you can lose your cars for seve days, and you could face a fine of up to 360 dollars.

Just last week, eight drivers on the Sea to Sky were fined and their vehicles seized. And they were clocked at 140 kilometres an hour in an 80 zone.

“The numbers are kind of grim, excessive speed, excessive driving, does end up resulting in a lot of accidents, injury accidents, and tragically, sometimes death,” said Jeff Palmer with the West Vancouver Police. “So, as we do work together on an on-going basis with other police agencies, and Air One, we are just making clear to the public that we’ll be present this weekend and they can expect extra enforcement. We want people to get where they’re going safely.”
