Liberal candidate Laurie Throness has defeated an NDP incumbent in the riding of Chilliwack-Hope.
Throness won the seat in a rematch of the 2012 by-election, defeating NDP incumbent Gwen O’Mahony by 14 per cent of the vote as of 9:17 p.m. on election night.
Throness served as chief of staff for former federal Conservative Chuck Strahl in the ministries of Agriculture, Aboriginal Affairs and Transport. He also worked for former Chilliwack MLA Harvey Schroeder, who served the area from 1972-1976. Throness ran for public office for the first time in 2012.
O’Mahony had served as the NDP’s critic for Skills Training and as Deputy Critic for advanced Education following her 2012 by-election win.
Conservative candidate Michael Henshall had taken 11.5 per cent of the vote as of 9:17 p.m. on election night.
