A game of hide and seek took a wrong turn for a 12-year-old Courtenay girl who ended up locked in an old bank vault.
The girl was playing on Tuesday in the basement of her parents’ restaurant, the Mandarin Village, which previously was a branch of the Royal Bank.
During the hide-and-seek game, the girl went into the vault and door got locked.
No one knew the combinations to the old vault, so her sister called 9-1-1.
Emergency crews and locksmiths were called in to see if they could get the door open.
When they couldn’t figure out the combination, workers from the City of Courtenay blasted a hole through the concrete wall and pulled the girl to safety.
The girl was uninjured and went to school the next day.
Locksmiths say it’s a reminder to ensure old walk-in vaults are decommissioned.
