I recently got the chance to go on 103.9 The Juice to talk about my previous blog post on Okanagan slang. I had never been on the radio before. I feel like it’s something everyone should do at least once in their lifetime, it’s quite the adrenaline rush!
Coming from broadcast news, it was really neat watching Mark and Jennifer do their radio thing. The times that I wasn’t on the air, I was soaking in the radio experience: the big microphones the hosts get to use, the screen showing what’s on the air at that moment and what’s coming up, and the delicate dance of airing commercials, getting in the news and weather, playing back viewer comments and chatting with me.
While the whole experience was awesome, a moment that sticks out in my mind would have to be when Mark sang his Rockets Super Fan song. He was singing it to the radio audience, but in my mind, he was serenading me with it. Plus the song was set to Elton John’s Rocketman, which is one of my all-time favourite songs, so he got five stars from me.
My time with them that morning put me in a good mood for the rest of the day. And who knows? Maybe I could return the favour to them and bring them to the CHBC newsroom…
