Interactive map: Potholes in Halifax Regional Municipality

HALIFAX – Milder temperatures are creating some pretty nasty potholes in our region.

They’re not hard to find, but they sure are easy to hit.

“I’ve hit a couple in the last couple months that I think might have done some damage,” says Colleen Armstrong. “One, I hit at night and you really couldn’t see it at all and it made a horrible noise right when I hit it.”

Is there a pothole in your neighbourhood? Pinpoint it on our interactive map below.

Garages in the Halifax-area are being kept busy with customers like Armstrong.

Often times, their vehicles just need an alignment, but sometimes it’s worse.

“When you throw off your alignment, you will ruin your tires. it will cause irregular wearing,” says Amanda Williams of Miller Tirecraft.

She says there’s been an increase in the number of people needing tire alignments lately.

“We’ve even had a few customers, I’ve noticed, hit a couple of potholes more than once,” she says. “Not just ruining a tire, but ruining the rims [and] in some cases even worse.”

Halifax Regional Municipality has a hotline (311) you can call to report potholes, or they can be reported online.

The provincial government also has a toll-free hotline.

But, it’s a wait and see game to see how long it will take for a work crew to fill in the crater.

“If something is particularly serious, of course, it would get a higher priority,” says Halifax Chebucto MLA Howard Epstein. “But the standard the department [of Transportation] has is if there’s anything at all that’s deeper than four inches on the 100-series or trunk highways, it’ll be fixed within a week.”

For now, potholes are repaired with a temporary patch, called cold mix.

Once we hit the summer months, crews will start using hot mix asphalt, which lasts longer.
