Environment Canada issued a rainfall warning for parts of central Alberta on Monday afternoon because it said a “slow-moving low pressure system will stall over central Alberta for the next couple of days.”

The weather agency issued the warnings for parts of west-central Alberta just before 3:30 p.m.

“Areas to the immediate west and northwest of the low will receive significant amounts of rainfall,” Environment Canada said on it website. “By Tuesday evening, portions of west-central Alberta are expected to see 50 to 60 millimetres of rain.

“The rain is expected to taper off overnight and then resume wednesday morning.”

Global meteorologist Jesse Beyer said the biggest risk to areas under a warning was flash flooding as a result of the “heavy and prolonged showers.”

Beyer added that some areas under the warning that are at a higher elevation could also be impacted by “cold air dropping in.”

“There could also be the risk for a rain/snow mix early Tuesday for some,” he said.
