An 18-year-old man is facing a variety of charges following a police chase that ended with officers using a spike belt to stop a stolen vehicle.
An officer tried to pull over a vehicle on Longwoods Road near Westdel Bourne at around 2 a.m. Monday, but the vehicle continued to travel westbound.
The officer tried to get the driver’s attention by passing the suspect vehicle, but it suddenly manoeuvred and struck the police cruiser.
The officer wasn’t hurt and the OPP cruiser sustained minor damage.
Police say the vehicle failed to stop. Middlesex OPP units, assisted by members of the Chippewas of the Thames Police Service, Oneida Nation of the Thames First Nation Police Service and the Munsee Delaware Nation Police Service responded to the area.
Police say a tire deflation device was successfully deployed by a responding officer. The vehicle came to a controlled stop moments later and the suspect was arrested without incident.
The investigation revealed that the 1998 Dodge pickup truck had been reported stolen to the Elgin County OPP on Sunday.
