IIO investigating fatal police incident in Port Coquitlam

B.C.’s police watchdog has been called in to investigate a fatal police incident in Port Coquitlam.

The Independent Investigations Office (IIO) will look to see if there was any wrongdoing after a man is believed to have killed himself outside his home.

Police were called to the 2100-block of Audrey Drive just after 7 p.m. Sunday after receiving a report of a distraught man threatening to harm himself.

The man allegedly fired shots in the air outside his home just minutes before police were on the scene.

When officers arrived, shots were fired by police and the man, who was later found deceased.

IIO investigators were deployed to the scene and will be collecting physical evidence, interviewing any witnesses and designating and interviewing officers. The investigation will focus on whether the man’s injuries were self-inflicted or from police.

No one else was injured in the incident.
