Lethbridge Police have charged a 42-year-old man following a standoff in west Lethbridge on Wednesday. Daniel Desmond Crowder was charged with uttering threats and other offences following an incident that spanned several hours.
Members of the critical incident response team surrounded an apartment complex along the 2500 block of Walsh Drive as a result of concerning comments the man had been making on social media.
Police attempted to contact Crowder to check on his well-being, but he refused to speak to officers. A portion of the building was evacuated at around 10:20 a.m. and, as a safety precaution, roads were blocked to the area.
After the apartment was secured the man continued to post concerning comments, and Lethbridge Police deployed a number of special units. Police made a number of unsuccessful attempts to communicate with the man, and finally around 4:00 p.m. he began speaking with negotiators and exited his home.
Crowder was taken safely into custody and no one was injured. He was charged with uttering threats, possession of body armour without a valid permit, breach of recognizance and failure to comply with probation order.
Crowder was remanded in custody and made his first court appearance Thursday morning. The matter was subsequently adjourned until May 30.
