Supporters of a Bay Street stop for the LRT are not happy about a decision that came down at the end of the marathon LRT session at Hamilton City Hall Tuesday night.
In a narrow 8-7 vote, councillors decided against the stop.
COMMENTARY: Civility takes a holiday in Hamilton LRT debate
The vote came despite evidence presented by the Hamilton Chamber of Commerce, McMaster University and area businesses that suggests the benefits outweigh the drawbacks of a stop at Bay Street.
Chamber president Keenan Loomis says the fight is not over.
He and the supporters of the Bay Street stop say they will continue to make the case because he says it makes sense.
The chamber’s presentation included representatives of McMaster University’s downtown health campus who pointed out the health centre gets 70,000 patient-visits a year. Area businesses say the stop would be important for employees and customers.
The chamber also highlighted the audience for events at First Ontario Centre, Hamilton Place and the Convention Centre, not to mention those with business at city hall.
Loomis says it was either cluelessness, cowardice, or sabotage that produced the decision. One thing it was not, he says, was leadership.
