As the storm continues to develop off the coast, more precipitation is expected Friday through Saturday over the South Coast. While the snow is expected to become mixed with rain or change to rain this afternoon near sea level, for communities at higher elevations or inland, precipitation will remain in the form of snow through Saturday morning. Total snowfall accumulations of 5 to 10 centimetres are expected over low-lying coastal regions by Saturday morning with up to 25 cm over higher terrain.

SkyTrain

Some brief delays and gaps in service due to intrusion alarms on the guideway being set off by chunks of snow and ice. SkyTrain attendants are now on Expo Line and Millennium Line trains, because intrusion alarms have been disabled. This keeps service consistent, but can mean slower speeds. Expo Line service is roughly every 3 minutes, and Millennium Line every 6.

SeaBus

Operating normally.

Flight delays and cancellations

Harbour Air seaplane flights have been cancelled for the remainder of the day.

Some flights at YVR have been cancelled this morning. Check this morning before heading out the door.

In addition, if you are flying out of Abbotsford Airport and Victoria Airport today, there are some weather-related cancellations and delays. Please give yourself extra time to get to the airport and check the status of your flight before you leave home.

Power use

BC Hydro says it saw electricity demand peak at 9,869 megawatts between 5 and 6 p.m. on Thursday. This is a new record for the year.

Electricity demand increased by 18 per cent. That’s nearly 1,500 megawatts higher than last Thursday’s peak demand of 8,393 megawatts. The record set in November 2006 of 10,113 megawatts remains in place.

Bridges

Crews have been prepping the Port Mann Bridge and Alex Fraser Bridge for today’s snowfall.

Workers  in harnesses spent much of Thursday loading chain link collars on the beams in order to keep ice bombs from falling onto vehicles below. Transportation Minister Todd Stone says either bridge could be closed in a worst-case scenario – but increased monitoring has been installed and safety engineers will be on site moving forward.
