People looking for work in Calgary should start re-connecting with potential employers in their job fields.

Dennis Kroepfl has been out of work since August and after 19 years with the same company is learning some new skills from Right Management to find work.

“Most important is networking … how to contact former employees and get an idea of what jobs are out there and what companies are looking for staff,” explained Kroepfl.

Career consultant Richard Bucher said who you know and what you know is more important than ever as the Calgary employment picture improves.

He suggested people looking for work have to change how they search and apply for potential openings.

Instead of waiting to apply for job openings, people should look for companies who may need their skills.

“Now is the time to refresh those relationships again because the people inside those organizations are inside the information about where the development trends are.”

Sharlene Massie the CEO of About Staffing is also seeing more employers looking for job candidates and expects more openings next year.

She said people looking for work have to be proactive.

“They should go after the companies that they want to work for or the industries they really want to be in. Research the companies, research the key people in those companies,” Massie said.

She suggested it’s also time to refresh social media profiles like LinkedIn.

It’s also a good time of year to network in person.

“The middle of December to the middle of January is an easier time to reach people so the decision makers are actually happy to talk to people at this time.”
