Police have arrested three suspects in connection with three muggings that occurred in Saint-Henri along Notre-Dame Street.
Speaking at a recent meeting at the Sud-Ouest borough council, police alleged the three men belonged to two groups of criminals that operated in southwestern Montreal, extending into the western part of the island.
“The gratuitous violence we’ve experienced here in the borough recently is a matter of serious concern to us as it infringes on our quality of life,” councillor Craig Sauvé said.
The alleged assailants would plan the crimes near Metro stations in order to get away quickly.
“I don’t go out at night alone anymore,” commuter Meredith Hooker told Global News.
“I used to walk to the Little Burgundy Pool, but now I drive. I’ve got a whistle on my key chain. It’s definitely concerning.”
Montreal police have stepped up their patrols around public areas, saying perpetrators operate around Metro stations to allow for an easy getaway.
“I’ve felt safer in the past, now I’m a little more cautious and prudent,” said Saint-Henri resident Martin Grezak.
“I try to make sure I get the bus as early as possible outside of the borough.”
Grezak transfers at Lionel-Groulx Metro, where he says there is an increased police presence.
Although reassured by the arrests, Hooker still fears crime will not disappear so easily.
“I think it’s really going to be the most stress-relieving part when there is an actual drop in the violent altercations,” Hooker said.
“It is definitely a step in the right direction.”
Until then, she will only be taking the metro during the daytime.
