RCMP say a 16-year-old girl was killed after being hit by a vehicle on Pacific Way in Kamloops.
It happened on Friday evening, around 6:45 p.m. A person who lives in the area heard the collision, responded to the scene and called the police immediately.
When police arrived, they found the teenager deceased.
Global News has identified the girl as Jennifer Gatey. Saturday would have been her 17th birthday.
The vehicle did not remain at the scene and so far, no one has come forward with a description of it.
An earlier statement from RCMP said police believe the vehicle is a pick-up truck, although an updated statement now says this may not be the case, and that police do not know what type of vehicle was involved.
Police are now canvassing the area, looking for a vehicle that may have damage to the front passenger side.
RCMP are actively looking for witnesses and ask anyone with information to call the Kamloops Detachment at 250-828-3000 or to contact Crime Stoppers.
