WINNIPEG – An artist from Greece is using her knowledge of traditional European aesthetics to put a modern twist on scented creations made from raw Manitoba materials.

Anastasia Tertigka started making Myrenia natural candles and soaps in her home city Athens before moving to Paris and London to learn more.

“This was my hobby, when I had money I went everywhere in Europe trying to learn things about fragrances and recipes and new things,” Tertigka said.

After her business took off in Europe, she moved to Winnipeg in 2014 and is now recreating her products with local ingredients.

“Lavender is from Manitoba farms and also a lot of seeds that they use such as dried herbs are from here,” Tertigka said.

“For the heating pads I use seeds and blends that I buy from farms, for example I used to make it with buckwheat now I have a different special blend.”

Tertigka makes a special massage candle blend, that can be used as body butter, from almond and coconut oil.

“You light your candle, you get into the shower and when you’re done you put out the flame and you pour it over to yourself,” Tertigka said.

“It doesn’t burn it’s just warm and it’s a warm oil like having a massage.”

The wax tablets she makes are from a 16th century recipe, which she recreates with a floral touch.

“They used to use that in pantries to take away the bad smell of mold and food and I tried to make it work in the 21st century.”

Tertigka also creates natural candles with wooden wicks made from plywood that crackle like a log fire as they burn.

“I don’t like chemicals… all candles are 100 per cent natural and I made them with soy wax, they are made from soy bean.”
