Cockroaches found in lunchroom at Saskatoon’s Royal University Hospital

Saskatoon Health Region officials say they’re doing everything they can, as quickly as they can, to get rid of cockroaches at Royal University Hospital.

Officials have confirmed cockroaches were discovered in a ground level lunchroom used by intensive care unit staff.

They were alerted to the situation last Friday.

“We have monitoring around the hospital to look at any of our traps to see if there’s any indication of any other bugs,” said Lisa White, director of support services for the health region.

“We have only found them in this area and we’re dealing with them.”

According to officials, the pests could have come in from anywhere.

At this point, there’s no evidence of them in patient areas of the hospital.

A pest management company has been called in, using biologically safe measures, to aggressively contain and eliminate the cockroaches.

Officials say monitoring of this particular area has now increased to three times a week and a reduction in the number of cockroaches should take less than a week, when the powder should take full effect.
